This study explores how the AV1 telepresence robot supports social connection for students who are unable to attend school due to long-term health conditions. Through interviews with homebound upper secondary students in Norway, the research found that AV1 can help maintain friendships and a sense of belonging by enabling students to see, hear and interact with their classmates in real time. For some students, the robot became a meaningful extension of their presence in the classroom, reducing feelings of isolation and helping them stay socially engaged with school life.
However, the study also highlights that the benefits of telepresence technology are not universal. The extent to which AV1 supports socialisation depends on individual circumstances such as the student’s health, personality, existing friendships and the classroom environment. Technical issues like poor internet connectivity and limited energy due to illness can also restrict participation. Overall, the research emphasises that while telepresence robots are a valuable tool for maintaining school connection, their success relies on supportive social contexts and thoughtful implementation.
