This study created two detailed, expert-agreed models to help students return to school after long absences caused by physical illness or mental health conditions.

Using input from 56 experts in 18 countries, the researchers mapped out several phases, from hospitalisation, through discharge, to full school reintegration, and identified key actions at each stage (like welcoming, planning lessons, monitoring progress, involving health and education professionals, and supporting wellbeing).

The models underscore that success depends on collaboration between schools, healthcare, learners, and families, plus tailoring the approach to the learner’s condition and local context.
