This report shows that many Australian students face barriers that go beyond the classroom, including health issues, housing instability, food insecurity and social disadvantage.
MissingSchool notes the data on illness and caring as the two primary reasons why students miss three or more months of school.
It recommends a shift toward “full-service schools,” where education is combined with supports such as healthcare, mental-health services, meals, tutoring and family assistance, all provided through the school. This model aims to reduce inequities and help every student stay engaged and succeed.
The report calls for long-term funding, dedicated coordination roles, strong community partnerships and flexible services that can be tailored to local needs.
