Live & Learn Ep. 35: National Centre for Childhood Grief

Welcome to Episode 35 of Live & Learn. Megan Gilmour speaks with Carolyn Johns, senior bereavement counsellor at the National Centre for Childhood Grief. Carolyn shares how grief affects children emotionally, socially and physically, often showing up as behaviour changes or withdrawal. She challenges the myth that children are too young to grieve and explains that grief isn’t something to “fix” but a lifelong experience. The episode underscores the need for grief education, safe spaces in schools, and helping children feel understood and supported.

The National Centre for Childhood Grief, also known as A Friend’s Place, is a not-for-profit that supports bereaved children and families after the death of a parent, sibling or close loved one. Around one in 20 Australian children will lose a parent before age 18. NCCG offers a safe, nurturing space where children can express grief through counselling and group programs, helping them build resilience and adjust to life without their person.
