Welcome to Episode 23 of Live & Learn. This week, Megan Gilmour is joined by Associate Professor Glenn Melvin, clinical psychologist and researcher at Deakin University. Glenn shares insights from his work with students experiencing emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA), sometimes called school refusal or school can’t, a growing issue that affects school attendance. He explains the importance of early support, family-school collaboration, and shifting from blame to curiosity.
EBSA is a response to overwhelming stress, often linked to anxiety or bullying. It affects learning, friendships and family wellbeing and the numbers are rising, especially post-pandemic. For more about Glenn’s work and helpful resources, visit parentingstrategies.net, and the International Network for School Attendance.
