Welcome to Episode 33 of Live & Learn. This week, Megan Gilmour speaks with Annabel Reid, CEO of Carers Australia, about the often-overlooked experiences of young carers—children and teens who support family members with illness, disability, mental health issues or age-related needs. Annabel discusses how caring can impact education and social wellbeing, and shares how schools can better identify and support young carers.
There are over 400,000 young carers in Australia, many of whom remain hidden or unsupported in school communities. These young people often experience disrupted education and social isolation. Carers Australia is the national peak body for unpaid carers, including young carers, providing advocacy, resources, and programs such as the Young Carer Bursary. The organisation works to ensure carers are recognised, valued, and connected—within schools and across the broader community.
