This international review of the AV1 telepresence robot finds it can help students with chronic illness stay socially and academically connected to school by allowing real-time participation in class and keeping friendships alive.

Its success depends less on the robot itself and more on practical supports: a welcoming classroom culture, teachers who plan for hybrid participation, reliable internet and funding, and careful attention to privacy and student health. While many students and teachers report clear benefits, the review cautions that telepresence is not a one-size-fits-all solution and calls for better training, stronger implementation plans, and more research to make these tools truly inclusive.
