Welcome to Episode 31 of Live & Learn. Megan Gilmour speaks with Christine Brooks, Vice Chair of NOFASD Australia, teacher, and caregiver to a young adult with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Christine shares personal and professional insights on how FASD affects learning, memory, and behaviour, highlighting that with empathy, early intervention, and inclusive practices, students can thrive.
FASD is a lifelong brain condition caused by prenatal alcohol exposure, affecting an estimated 2–5% of children in Australia. Symptoms include learning difficulties, impulsivity, and sensory issues. NOFASD Australia is the national peak body for FASD, offering resources, training, and a free helpline. Family-driven, it promotes awareness, prevention, and better outcomes for people with FASD.
