In June 2013, MissingSchool held a Consultation in Canberra to consider the challenges facing kids who miss school because of critical or chronic illness or injury. We were grateful to have the shared insight and understanding from so many sectors of the community. The consultation was attended by parents/carers, educators, health and allied health practitioners, researchers, charities and community groups interested in the topic of keeping serious sick children and young people connected to their school communities.
One of the activities involved the collection of Post-It Notes on which people had written just one or two words about their understanding of “what the kids want”. In the months following the consultation, consideration of the ideas flowing from this activity yielded a number of main themes which are described in the attached report.
We look forward to continuing our work with input from all who help care for seriously sick kids, and thank attendees again for their contribution.
