There is limited research in the Australian context on the academic, social and emotional impact on young people experiencing prolonged and/or recurrent separation from school due to serious illness.
In the first instance, dedicated metrics are needed to inform the extent of this issue and to fill gaps in research and evidence. This will guide early intervention work in supporting young Australians who are educationally and socially disadvantaged by their medical circumstances.
MissingSchool is working with others to address the gaps in evidence, and to curate research findings and present them here in a way that enables families and those who care for seriously sick kids to make a difference in their educational and social prospects.
