MissingSchool is an incorporated association, charitably dedicated to kids who miss school due to serious medical circumstances by:
MissingSchool recognises significant school absence for kids relating to, for example: Asthma, Arthritis, Blood Disorders, Brain Injury, Burns, Cancer, Crohn’s Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, Diabetes, Eating Disorders, Epilepsy, Heart Disease, and Transplants. There are, of course, other circumstances.
The importance of school to kids is well established. Long term benefits are gained by preventing or mitigating the social, emotional and psychological disadvantages of recurrent and/or prolonged disconnection of seriously sick kids from their schools.
MissingSchool’s objective of keeping seriously sick kids connected arises from the view that school is a kid’s community. Connection to this most important community is a source of support which can alleviate the stress and anxiety of sickness, promote resilience and optimism, and encourage seriously sick kids to remain positively engaged in all aspects of their present and future. Importantly, to have realised that there is more to who they are, and their life, than being sick.
